Q1.Explain any four of the following passages with reference to the context ( in around 150 words each) : 4×8=32

(i) “What are you saying Septimus ?” Rezia asked, wild with terror, for he was talking to himself. She sent Agnes [ 2 ] BEGC–112 running for Dr. Holmes. Her husband, she said, was mad. He scarcely knew her. “You brute ! You brute !” cried Septimus, seeing human nature, that is Dr. Holmes enter the room.”

(ii) “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood -dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere. The ceremony of innocence is drowned.”

(iii) “ were we led all that way for Birth or Death ? There was a birth, certainly, We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death, [ 3 ] BEGC–112 But had thought they were different; this Birth was Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death our death.”

(iv) “He was married and added five children to the populati on, which our Eugenist says was the right number for a parent of his generation. (i) Examine how D. H. Lawrence engages with themes of class and gender in Sons and Lovers.

(ii) Discuss the significance of the title “I think continually of those who are truly great.”

(iii) Explain the central theme of the poem ‘The Unknown Citizen’ by W. H. Auden. How does Auden fuse the traits of the elegy and satire in this poem ?

(iv) Explain the symbolism in T. S. Eliot ’s poem “The Journey of the Magi”. [ 6 ]

(i) Consider Virginia Woolf’s no vel Mrs. Dalloway as a modernist novel. In what ways does Woolf dep art from the tradition of the nineteenth century realist novel ?

(ii) “Sons and Lovers may be considered as a modernist ‘bildungsroman .” Do you agree with this view ?
