Q1.Explain any four of the following passages with reference to the context (around 150 words each) : 4×8=32

(i) “For, now that it was all over, t ruce signed, and the dead buried, he had, especially in the evening, these sudden thunder -claps of [ 2 ] BEGC–112 fear. He could not feel. As he opened the door of the room where the Italian girls sat making hats, he could see them; could hear them, but something f ailed him, he could not feel.”

(ii) “ but now I know That twenty centuries of story sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born.”

(i) Explain the symbolism in Yeats’ poem The Second Coming.

(ii) Write a short essay on psychoanalytic readings of Sons and Lovers.

(iii) Explain the significance of the title “I think continually of those who are truly great.”

(iv) Discuss the biblical background of the poem ‘Journey of the Magi’.

Q4.Write an essay ( in around 300 words) on any one of the following : 20

(ii) Explain how Auden fuses two genres – satire and elegy —to create a poem (“The Unknown Citizen” ) that reflects many aspects of the modern condition.
