Q1.Explain any four of the following passages with reference to the context : 4×8=32

(i) “The War had taught him. It was sublime. He had gone through the whole show, friendship, European war, death, had won promotion, was still under thirty and was bound to survive. He was right there. The last shells missed him. He watched them explode with indifference. [ 2 ] BEGC–112 That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born ?”

(iii) “We returned to our palaces, these Kingdoms, But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation; With an alien people clutching their gods, I should be glad of another death.”

(i) Discuss the autobiographical elements in Sons and Lovers. [ 4 ] BEGC–112

(ii) Explain how Virginia Woolf depicts the character of septimus Warren Smith in Mrs. Dalloway.

(iii) Consider W. H. Auden‟s poem „The Unknown Citizen‟ as a satirical elegy.

(iv) „T. S. Eliot‟s poem „Journey of the Magi‟ is a poem with a Christian theme.‟ Discuss.

Q4.Write an essay (in around 300 words) on any one of the following : 20

(a) Explain the symbolism of Yeats‟ poem „The Second Coming‟ with reference to his cyclical theory of history.

(b) Discuss how Virginia Woolf employs the stream of conscious ness technique in the novel Mrs. Dalloway.
