• All 8 compulsory courses are required (MLI 101, MLII 101, MLI 102, MLII 102, MLII 103, MLII 104, MLIP 2, MLII 105) — that's 32 credits locked in.
• The remaining 8 credits must come from any 2 of the 6 elective papers, MLIE 101 through MLIE 106.
• Each elective paper carries 4 credits, so picking 2 papers covers the full 8 credits needed.

• Programme fee: Most current (2026) sources put this at ₹12,000, though some sources quote figures between ₹11,100 and ₹11,500.

7. How to apply — step by step

1. Create your ABC ID: Generate your APAAR/ABC ID for free through DigiLocker — this is now mandatory for all new admissions.
2. Register on the Samarth portal: Go to ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in, click New Registration, and provide a working mobile number and email for OTP verification.
3. Set your login credentials: Choose a username and an 8-16 character alphanumeric password.
4. Select the MLIS programme: Log in, pick MLIS under Master's Degree Programmes (School of Social Sciences), and choose your regional centre.
5. Upload documents: Scanned photograph, signature, Library/Information Science bachelor's degree mark sheet and certificate (or NISCAIR/DRTC Associateship certificate), and category certificate (if applicable).
6. Pay the fee: Pay the ₹300 registration fee followed by the programme fee online — confirm the exact amount on the Samarth portal itself.
7. Submit and wait for verification: Submit the form, save your confirmation, and study material is dispatched once document verification is complete.

8. ABC ID and DEB ID — why they matter

The ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits ID) is a unique identifier that tracks all your academic credits at a national level — it's now mandatory for admission at IGNOU and virtually every university, and can be created for free through DigiLocker. The DEB ID (Distance Education Bureau ID) confirms that your chosen programme is approved by UGC's Distance Education Bureau — MLIS, like all of IGNOU's ODL programmes, is DEB-approved, which you can verify at deb.ugc.ac.in.
