IGNOU MAANY (MA Anthropology) : Fees, Syllabus, Eligibility

1. What exactly is MAANY? (and how it differs from the older MAAN)

Picture this — a graduate who wants to deeply understand human society, culture, biology and behaviour; a UPSC/State PCS aspirant who needs a strong foundation in the Anthropology optional subject; or someone working in an NGO, health sector or research institute who wants to study human societies through a scientific lens. IGNOU built this programme for exactly these kinds of learners, and it's called MAANY — Master of Arts (Anthropology).

This programme is offered under IGNOU's School of Social Sciences (SOSS), by the Discipline of Anthropology. Anthropology is the study of human beings in time and space. The programme takes an integrated approach, combining physical, social and archaeological anthropology, with equal emphasis on theoretical understanding and practical technique, so that students develop a holistic grasp of the subject. Its aim is to develop trained anthropologists for academic and research institutes, NGOs, government organisations, health sectors and applied sciences.

2. Eligibility and medium of instruction

The eligibility criteria for MAANY are kept deliberately simple:

• Eligibility: Per IGNOU's official Samarth admission portal — a bachelor's degree or a higher degree from a recognised university, in any stream.
• Entrance test: None — admission is based directly on your qualifying degree.
• Age limit: No minimum or maximum age limit is stated on the official page.
• Medium of instruction: Per IGNOU's July 2026 Common Prospectus, MAANY is offered in both English and Hindi.

3. Duration, credits and structure at a glance

MAANY's structure differs from the older annual system in that it's organised into semesters, though examinations still follow an annual pattern:

Per the programme guide, the entire programme comprises 80 credits across 18 courses, offered in four semesters of 20 credits each. However, term-end examinations are not conducted semester-wise — instead, they follow an annual pattern: the examination for Semester 1 and Semester 2 (first year) is conducted together after completion of one year of study, and the examination for Semester 3 and Semester 4 (second year) together after completion of the second year. The programme covers all four branches of the discipline — Social-Cultural, Biological, Archaeological and Applied Anthropology — in a balanced way, integrating theory, fieldwork and research.

4. Complete semester-wise syllabus

Here's what each semester covers, explained in plain language (based on IGNOU's July 2026 Common Prospectus):

Year 1 — First Semester (all 5 courses compulsory, 4 credits each)

Year 1 — Second Semester (all 5 courses compulsory, 4 credits each)

5. How to choose electives in Semester 3 and 4

This is where most students get confused, so let's break it down in plain terms. Semester 3 is entirely elective-based and structured as follows:

• Group A (Biological Anthropology stream): Choose any two from MANE-101, MANE-102, MANE-103, MANE-104 (8 credits total).
• Group B (Social-Cultural Anthropology stream): Choose any two from MANE-105, MANE-106, MANE-107, MANE-108 (8 credits total).
• Multidisciplinary elective: Choose one of MPA-033 or MED-008 (4 credits).

This adds up to the full 20 credits for Semester 3: 8 from Group A + 8 from Group B + 4 from the multidisciplinary elective. In Semester 4, both MANL-101 (Practical) and MANP-101 (Dissertation) are compulsory (8+8=16 credits), and the remaining 4 credits come from choosing either MGS-109 or MED-002 as the multidisciplinary elective.

6. Fee structure

Per IGNOU's official MAANY Programme Guide on eGyanKosh, the fee structure is as follows:

The first-year fee (₹9,600) is payable along with the admission form itself, while the second-year fee (₹9,100) must be paid as per the university's schedule, without waiting for any separate communication from IGNOU. A separate registration fee of ₹300 also applies.

7. How to apply — step by step

1. Create your ABC ID: Generate your APAAR/ABC ID for free via DigiLocker — this is mandatory for admission.
2. Register on Samarth: Go to ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in, click "New Registration," and provide a working mobile number and email for OTP verification.
3. Create login credentials: Set a username and password, then log in.
4. Select the MAANY programme: From the list of Master's Degree Programmes, choose MAANY (School of Social Sciences) and select your regional centre.
5. Upload documents: Scanned photo, signature, graduation mark sheet and certificate, and category certificate if applicable.
6. Pay the fee: Pay the ₹300 registration fee along with the first-year programme fee online — confirm the exact amount on the Samarth portal.
7. Submit and wait for verification: Submit the form, save the confirmation, and study material will be dispatched after document verification.

8. ABC ID and DEB ID — why they matter

Your ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits ID), also called an APAAR ID, is a unique identifier that tracks your academic credits at a national level — it's generated free of cost through DigiLocker. The DEB ID (Distance Education Bureau ID) is then generated based on your ABC ID, confirming that you're enrolling in a recognised distance/online programme. Both IDs are mandatory for admission to ODL programmes — the application form simply won't go through without them.

9. Exam pattern and evaluation system

As per IGNOU's general evaluation framework, MAANY's assessment happens in two parts:

• Assignments (Continuous Evaluation): Compulsory for every theory course, typically carrying 30% weightage in the final result.
• Term-End Examination (TEE): The remaining 70% weightage comes from the term-end exam, held twice a year in June and December.
• Practical and project courses: MANL-101 (Practical) is evaluated through a practical examination, while MANP-101 (Dissertation) and MANE-106 (Ethnographic Training) are entirely project-based — these don't carry assignments or a term-end theory exam; evaluation is based purely on the project report.

Assignments for each session are also uploaded separately on IGNOU's website. Teleconferencing, radio counselling, and telecasts on Gyan Darshan/Swayamprabha channels are additional support facilities.

2. PhD/research: Pursue further research in Anthropology, Sociology, or related fields (such as IGNOU's own PHDAN programme).
3. Civil services/government jobs: This degree strengthens the theoretical base for UPSC, State PCS, and other government recruitment exams.
