Read the passage given below and answer the questions : Biodiversity is the variety of life. Identifying and understanding the relationships between all the life on E arth are some of the greates t challenges in science. Species diversity is only one part of diversity. To properly catalogue all life on E arth, we have to recognise genetic diversity within species as well as the diversity of entire habitats and ecosystems. Genetic biodiversity is t he variation in genes that exist within a species. Ecological biodiversity is the diversity of ecosystems, natural communities, and habitats. In essence, it is the variety of ways that species interact with each other and their environment. Biodiversity is extremely important to people and the health of ecosystems. Biodiversity keeps us healthy by providing a wide variety of food materials. Most medical discoveries were made because of research into plant and animal biology and genetics. Every time a spec ies goes extinct, we may lose the possibility of discovering a new vaccine or drug. Biodiversity is also an important part of ecological services such as cleaning water, absorbing chemicals and providing oxygen. Species have gone extinct because of natur al shifts in the environment. Today species are BEGS-183 4 going extinct at an accelerated and dangerous rate because of environmental changes caused by human activities. Some human activities have direct effects such as habitat loss and degradation, while others hav e indirect effects. All these threats have put a serious strain on the diversity of species.
