Section—A
Q1.Explain any four of the following passages with reference to the context, giving brief critical comments (in 150 words each) : 4×5=20
(a) We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; [ 2 ] BEGC–110 One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
(b) She had a heart —how shall I say –too soon made glad, Too easily impressed, she liked whate’er She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
(c) The sea is calm tonight. The tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits ;—on the French coast the light Glems and is gone; the cliffs of England stand, Glimmering and vast, out in the tran quil bay.

(e) The splendor falls on castle walls And snowy summits old in story : The long light shakes across the lakes, And the wild cataract leaps in glory.
(f) Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach; Three fields to cross till a farm appears; A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch And blue spurt of a lighted match, And a voice less loud, thro’ its joys and fears, Than the two hearts beating each to each.

Q2.Answer any two of the following questions in about 250 words each : 2×10=20
(a) Mme. Defarge’s role in the novel A Tale of Two Cities is crucial to the story. Discuss.
(b) What is the main event in the first two chapters of The Mayor of Casterbridge ? Describe it briefly.
(c) Write a critical analysis of Bro wning’s poem ‘Meeting at Night’.
(d) Write a critical appreciation of Hopkin s’ poem ‘Pied Beauty’. [ 4 ]
